River height higher than normal

- By SOPHIE BURGE

Higher than normal levels in the Edward River have been attributed to recent significant rainfall in the north east of Victoria.

River levels were sitting at 2.33m yesterday and had risen 0.44m from last Thursday, according to data from the closest measuring station at Deniliquin. In the last days of June, it peaked at 1.3m. Last July, the maximum height of the Edward River was 1.3m, before rising to 2m in early August.

A NSW Department of Primary Industries Water spokesperson said the higher river levels were a result of recent rainfall runoff upstream, with inflows from the Kiewa and Ovens rivers.

These two unregulated rivers are having a minimum release of 600 megalitres a day.

Parts of eastern Victoria have recorded between 100mm and 300mm of rain in the past month.

There have been massive inflows into the Hume, which has raised 10 per cent in the past week.
