Men will never know what mums go through during childbirth, but some of the blokes at the Steven Spellmaster hypnotist show at the Deni Rams clubrooms on Saturday night were given an insight.

The mesmerised men on stage were told they were giving birth . . . to twins no less!

Rams senior coach Gary Parsons (who already has twins) puffed, panted and pushed his way through the birth, which we suspect pleased wife Paula who was in the crowd.

About 190 people laughed their way through the twohour Spellmaster show. See social photos on page 6 today.

GOOD MEMORY

Deniliquin Business Chamber’s first ‘Aligning the Stars’ breakfast proved popular, with about 40 people turning out at The Crossing Cafe on Wednesday last week.

Pastoral Times managing editor Sam Hall facilitated the morning, posing a question to six of this year’s Deniliquin Business Awards winners based on their success.

The panel included popular Coach House bar manager Scott Buckley, who was asked by chamber president Justine Keech, ‘How do you do such a good job of remembering everyone’s name’?

‘‘I actually remember what they drink . . . that’s more important!’’ he responded.

RAMPED UP

Deniliquin Bowling Club officially opened its new disabled access ramp on Saturday afternoon.

President Ray Anderson wheeled Deniliquin Bowling Club Life Member Louise Begg to the top of the ramp so she could cut the ribbon to officially open it.

The club has also installed a new automatic door at the top of the ramp.

‘‘It’s something that has been in the works for at least 15 years,’’ Mr Anderson said.

‘‘It has been a specific goal of mine since I was elected president, so to have it finished is just fantastic for the club.’’

After being in a financial crisis in 2013 the club has managed to get itself to a financial position where the $40,000 project could become a reality.

BIG GATE

It was a massive day for the Deniliquin Rovers Football Club when it hosted the first semi final in the Picola & District Football Netball League North-West division on Sunday.

Supporters from around the league piled into Memorial Park to watch the footy and netball action.

Around $12,500 was taken at the gate, according to Rovers president Wally Bulmer.

‘‘It was a really successful day for the club and everything ran smoothly,’’ he said.

‘‘It was up on the previous day’s final which is good considering the league has been worried we’re not central enough to host a final.

‘‘The club is very appreciat- ive of Edward River Council for getting the ground to the standard it was, considering all the rain we’ve had.’’

RIVER DOWN

While the Edward River continues to recede, the impact of high levels still raised some concerns for council last week.

With the Edward spilling its banks in some areas after reaching a peak of 4.3m two weeks ago, a portion of the sealed carpark at McLean Beach was submerged.

In an effort to prevent damage to the sealed area and roads at the beach, Edward River Council closed off access to the beach late last week.

Council director technical services Mark Dalzell said it would remain closed until the ground ‘‘dries out a bit’’, which he said should be later this week.

Access to the Deniliquin Regional Park, behind Memorial Park and incorporating Willoughby’s Beach, is also closed.

The Edward River is dropping, on average, about 20-30cm each day.

At the time of going to print yesterday it was at 2.74m, down from 2.94m on Sunday and 3.17m on Saturday.

The Edward River reached its peak of 4.3m on August 14.

MORE RAIN

A steady downfall on Fri- day delivered 10.8mm by 9am Saturday in Deniliquin, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Continued light rains on Saturday topped it up to an even 11mm for the weekend.

It brings the month’s total rainfall to 37mm so far. It follows on from a total of 43mm last month, and 50.6mm in June.

POOR SIGN

Pretty Pine’s annual father’s day celebration is coming up, and to notify the public the Pretty Pine Recreation Reserve displayed a sign on the National Bridge. However, for the second year in a row, the sign was badly damaged over the weekend and will need to be taken down and replaced.

Father’s Day organisers say they aren’t sure why people continue to damage their sign.

QUALITY TRIVIA

A Camp Quality fundraiser was held Saturday night with great success. The trivia event held at the Sportsman’s Arms Hotel attracted more than 80 people.

Event organiser Annie Chalmers said the night raised around $2,235 and was a huge success.

‘‘It was all round a great night and lots of fun,’’ she said.

‘‘People even travelled from as far as Goulburn, Wagga and Geelong.

‘‘I’d like to thank our sponsors — The Sporties, Edward River Houseboats, Party Hire, Colligen Creek Firewood, Savage Spreading and Dave St Leon.’’
