Collectors to rally for big weekend
Organisers of the annual Deniliquin Spring Rally, to be held this Saturday and Sunday at Memorial Park, are expecting their biggest event.
Deniliquin Collectors Club’s rally coordinator Daryl Whateley said the theme for 2017 is ‘Ford and Fordson’ to mark a special milestone.
‘‘Fordson tractors are now 100 years old, and the Fordson Club has chosen to mark the special occasion at our rally,’’ Mr Whateley said.
‘‘We already have 200 Fordson tractors confirmed to be coming for the event, so we expect we may have up to 250 by the weekend.
‘‘For us long-term collectors, we’re unlikely to see a milestone of this magnitude again in our lifetime, so it will be a very big event.’’
Mr Whateley said Fordson is a national club with its base in Bendigo.
While only about a dozen tractors in the local area are included under the club’s banner, he said the tractor is ‘‘very popular’’ in the local area.
‘‘It’s a very popular model, and there would be a few still pumping along on local farms,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s a good, solid old tractor which eventually transitioned to be known as New Holland.
‘‘The Fordson was established in Ireland in 1917 by Henry Ford, after he lost control of his car company, and it transitioned to Ford when he regained that control in about the 1960s.’’
Mr Whateley said a large array of Ford cars and trucks would also be showcased at the Spring Rally, and said the centenary celebrations were also inspiring interest from other participants.
‘‘Swap site holders are coming out of the woodwork, and we’ll have a massive display of collectables in the pavilion and the Collectors Club shed.
‘‘The event will also include the popular tractor trek from 9am on Saturday, which will go through the CBD.
‘‘The show ‘n’ shine will be held on Sunday, with the event wrapping up about lunchtime.’’
Entry to the Spring Rally is $5 per day. Gates open at 7am both days.
