Two new bridge projects will be de­liv­ered in the Far­rer elec­torate fol­low­ing the an­nounce­ment of suc­cess­ful projects for round three of the Bridges Re­newal Pro­gram.

Mur­ray River Coun­cil will re­ceive close to $800,000 from the Aus­tralian Gov­ern­ment to help re­place age­ing wooden bridges for cross­ings at Mer­ran and Yar­rein Creeks.

Mem­ber for Far­rer Sus­san Ley said the re­place­ment bridges will def­i­nitely im­prove driv­ing con­di­tions for lo­cal res­i­dents and trans­port op­er­a­tors.

‘‘At Mer­ran Creek a new struc­ture will re­place the ex­ist­ing sin­gle lane tim­ber cross­ing with a two lane con­crete bridge, al­low­ing a new load limit of up to 166 tonnes,’’ she said.

‘‘On com­ple­tion, it will re­move an ex­ist­ing 15 kilo­me­tre de­tour for com­mer­cial and heavy ve­hi­cles.

‘‘Fund­ing for Yar­rein Creek will also see a new two lane con­crete bridge in­creas­ing the ex­ist­ing load limit from two to 166 tonnes, es­sen­tially adding 100 new years of life to the cross­ing.’’

The Mer­ran Creek Bridge re­place­ment will cost $798,800 and the Yar­rein Creek Bridge is costed at $788,800. The Fed­eral Gov­ern­ment’s fi­nan­cial com­mit­ment is be­ing matched by Mur­ray River Coun­cil.
