Sustainable Diversion Limit information session

Deniliquin Pastoral Times - - RURAL OUTLOOK -

Murray Darling Basin Authority staff will be in Finley on Monday as part of a series of southern basin information sessions.

The sessions aim to provide an update on the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. They will focus on the Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism, which is a key step in implementing the Basin Plan.

Finley’s meeting will be held from 3.30pm to 6pm at the Finley Golf Club in Tongs St. Registration is required for this session.

MDBA chief executive Phillip Glyde said the meetings aimed to improve public awareness and understanding of the Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism.

‘‘The Basin Plan sets sustainable diversion limits, which is how much water can be used in the Murray–Darling Basin, while leaving enough water for the environment,’’ Mr Glyde said.

‘‘To provide flexibility, the Basin Plan includes a mechanism to adjust sustainable diversion limits; if environmental outcomes can be reached with less water, more water can remain in the system for other users, including irrigated agriculture.

‘‘Basin governments want to ensure communities appreciate how the adjustment mechanism will affect them and why it’s so important in the delivery of the Basin Plan.

‘‘The MDBA is assessing a number of proposed state projects which aim to make the use of water for the environment more efficient.

‘‘These projects were identified and agreed in June 2017 — the next step is to determine how much water can be saved.

‘‘The preliminary assessment indicates there will be no need for any further water recovery in the southern connected Basin.’’

Representatives from state and Commonwealth government agencies will also be at the meetings to explain their roles and the projects in more detail.

Communities will be updated on how they can contribute to the next steps through a public comment process in October.
