North talks into grand final

Deniliquin Pastoral Times - - NEWS -

Deniliquin North School’s Year 5/6 team talked its way to consecutive wins to cement its place in the Premier’s Debating Challenge Riverina grand final to be held later this month.

The North debating team travelled to Griffith to compete in the semi-finals where it argued the negative side of the topic, ‘Australia should ban sugary drinks’.

North principal Megan Hunter said the team produced ‘‘outstanding arguments’’ and ‘‘rebutted beautifully’’.

‘‘One of the comments from the adjudicator, Joel Armstrong, to the team was, ‘I would be surprised if Mrs Hunter doesn’t get a Prime Minister out of your school’,’’ the North principal said.

‘‘Making it to the Riverina grand final is an amazing effort for such a small school, and it is the 7th or 8th consecutive year we have made it to the semis or the grand final — an amazing achievement.’’

Deni North competed against Hanwood Public School in the quarter finals, where it argued that ‘Feedback should only be given in primary school, instead of grades or marks’.

The adjudicator — Tony Davies from the NSW Arts Department — commented that Deni North was ‘‘particularly strong’’.
