Community representatives sought for Oz Day committee
Edward River Council is seeking two community representatives to serve on its new Australia Day Committee, which will oversee the delivery of Australia Day celebrations in the region and select recipients of the annual Australia Day Awards.
Mayor Norm Brennan, who will serve on the committee alongside Deputy Mayor Pat Fogarty and Councillor Marg Bull, encouraged community-minded residents to consider joining the committee.
‘‘Edward River Council’s Australia Day Committee will play an important role in planning and delivering local celebrations for Australia Day,’’ Cr Brennan said.
‘‘The committee will also oversee the administration of our local Australia Day Awards Scheme, which recognises the contributions and achievements of the unsung heroes in our community who work tirelessly to make the Edward River region an even better place to live.’’
Cr Brennan said one event will be held to celebrate Australia Day 2018, at Deniliquin’s Waring Gardens.
‘‘While the former Conargo Shire Council and Deniliquin Council held their own Australia Day events, Edward River Council has now consolidated our Australia Day Award categories and will be bringing the two communities together in holding one event,’’ he said.
‘‘For this coming Australia Day, we will be continuing the good work of the Deniliquin Lions and Rotary Club of Deniliquin and holding the event at Waring Gardens, but the committee will certainly be reviewing how and where local activities are held in the future.’’
Committee members will serve a threeyear term and can nominate individually or can be nominated as a representative of a community organisation or service club.
Nominations are now open and will close this Friday. Nomination forms are available online at www.edwardriver.nsw.gov.au or from council’s customer service centre at 180 Cressy Street, Deniliquin.
