Junior Deni stars in Southern Riv. sides
Five Deniliquin Rhinos cricketers have been selected in Southern Riverina representative teams to contest the Riverina Cricket Zone Under 14 and Under 16 championship carnivals in Albury next week.
Harry Hillier and Dylan Rotherham will compete in the Under 16 Colston-Scammell Shield competition while Tom Bradley, Kai Hillier and Charlie Hillier will contest the Gorrel Cup, the Riverina Under 14 championship.
The carnival will be held over three days at various grounds around the Albury/Wodonga area, starting this Sunday and ending Tuesday.
Participating cricket councils include Southern Riverina, Northern Riverina, Murrumbidgee and Cricket Albury-Wodonga Country.
Harry and Dylan are no strangers to the championships, both having played in the two previous years, winning Riverina titles with Southern Riverina at both under 14 and Under 16 level.
It is the first taste of cricket at this level for Tom, Kai and Charlie.
Tom represented Riverina PSSA at the state carnival last year, while Charlie is off to Bathurst in early December representing Riverina PSSA at the 2017 state carnival.
Harry and Dylan were also members of the Murray Valley McPherson Shield Under 16 premiership team last year, while Tom and Charlie played in the Deniliquin Rhinos Under 12 side which took out the Southern Riverina Bradley Shield title last season.
All the players have been developed through junior programs with the Deniliquin Rhinos over the past four years with Dylan now a member of the Rhinos Premier side in the Murray Valley and Harry playing alongside dad Tim with the Rhinos Division One side.
Tom, Kai and Charlie have also all had a taste of senior cricket, playing a game each in Division One and enthusiastically subfielding in Premier matches on a number of occasions.
Southern Riverina administrator Wayne Bradley congratulated the boys on their selection and paid tribute to the junior development and representative cricket programs of the Deniliquin Rhinos.
He said these programs have honed the development of the boys’ skills to enable them to gain selection at this high standard.
Mr Bradley said it would be the strongest ever representation of Deniliquin players in the history of these carnivals.
Rhinos senior coach John Arthur will be in charge of the Southern Riverina Under 16 team at Albury, assisted by Phil Rotherham.
Deni’s Tim Hillier will fill a coaching role with the Under 14 team, assisting Anthony Hyde from Cobram.
