Police are investigating a fire at a Macauley St house in Deniliquin on Saturday.

It was reported to NSW Fire & Rescue just before 3pm, and police said the blaze caused damage valued at $20,000.

A NSW Police forensic team arrived in Deniliquin on Sunday to investigate the scene.

Initial fears that someone had been inside the house when the fire took hold were allayed after two searches by firefighters.

Speaking to the Pastoral Times yesterday, Deniliquin NSW Fire & Rescue Captain Martin Smith said the property was handed over to police once the flames were extinguished on Saturday afternoon.

He said at this stage a cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

Capt Smith said the house was not completely razed by the fire, but smoke had spread throughout.

‘‘When we arrived we observed smoke coming from the front windows and the front door,’’ Capt Smith said.

‘‘We received the call about 2.52pm, and 12 firefighters were on scene with two appliances by 3pm.

‘‘There was a small fire in the kitchen or dining area, which was quickly extinguished.

‘‘There was fire damage to the wall and ceiling in that room, and smoke damage throughout.’’

NSW Rural Fire Service firefighters with the Deniliquin and Brassi brigades also responded to the call for assistance, but the fire had been extinguished by the time they arrived.
