Deniliquin Pastoral Times - - LOCAL CLASSIES -

Deniliquin Bowling Club’s Division One side claimed a huge scalp in the Campaspe Valley Bowls Division, knocking off ladder leader Moama on the carpet in Moama.

Deni held their nerve, having tight wins on all three rinks to post an overall 72-59 margin.

Shane Laing and his team of John Flisher, Dennis O’Keefe and Ray Brown had a magnificent battle all day with the scores being 11-all at the break.

There were never more than a few shots in the game all day until Moama got out to a four shot lead with only one end left to play. But the Deni side wouldn’t lay down.

They were one down on the last end when Flisher trailed the kitty back to where Deni were holding five shots.

Neither skip altered the head and Deni got up by one shot, 23-22.

Jamie Shields (s), Murray Freshwater, Paul Snare and David Hessel got off to a slow start and gave Moama a 7-0 lead after only four ends.

They worked their way back into the contest however and were only two shots down by afternoon tea.

It took until the 18th end before they managed to draw level, but then went on to score a four shot victory 22-18.

Stefan Truelsen (s), Conway Bovell, Lindsay Franklin and Ty King got a ‘two’ on the first end but immediately gave away a ‘five’ on the next.

They steadied after that and managed to stay in control of the game to come away with an eight shot win, 27-19.

This strong win consolidated second place on the ladder for Deni, with Echuca moving to first after a big win.

Deni Division Two had a tough day in Rich River going down by 13 shots overall.

Lloyd Ritchie and his side of Stuart Treble, Mark Tasker and Graham Nisbet had a strong rink win.

It was a close game up until the break with Deni holding a one shot lead.

After the break Deni came out and scored 22 shots to five, with a final score of 32-14.

Unfortunately that’s where the joy ended for Deni with Harry Lea (s), Mal Wubbels, Keith Plattfuss and Bill Young struggling all day with a final score 23-15 in favour of the hosts.

The Deni team held the opposition to ‘ones’ for the majority of the encounter, finishing the day in front 25-14.

Fay Munnerley’s team of Jo Bovell, Lyn Smith and Winnie Pattinson had a close game from the start and were level on the 11th end and again on the 23rd end, but scored a ‘two’ and a ‘one’ to finish three up, 23-20.

Vicki O’Keefe’s team of Joy McArthur, Dawn McCulloch and Aileen Kennedy took the lead at the sixth end and drew away to be leading 21-10 at the 19th when the opposition came back strongly and took the lead.
