Rovers return to training track

Deniliquin Pastoral Times - - SPORT -

Deniliquin Rovers Football Club returned to the training track under the blistering sun to continue their pre-season training at Memorial Park on Tuesday evening.

Rovers senior coach Josh Bode said the night saw some good numbers for the first session after the Christmas break.

‘‘We had about 22 blokes training with plenty of of other apologies,’’ he said.

‘‘Our first session before Christmas saw 40 players running around so I’m sure the numbers will pick up again soon.

‘‘We didn’t have some of our key recruits there like Des Morgan, Ricki Waters and Aaron Purcell to name a few, but they will all be there for Thursday’s session (last night).’’

One player whose fitness stood out on the track was midfielder Alex Hay, who is returning to the club this season and also coaching the Rovers thirds.

Tuesday’s session attracted a mix of seniors and reserves players.

‘‘It was good to see a mix of blokes wanting to prepare for the season,’’ Bode said.

‘‘We have started pretty early but we didn’t start as early as other clubs before Christmas.

‘‘I don’t think we need to be at the peak of our fitness at round one. If there was one thing I learned in my time (coaching) at Jerilderie, it was that starting a little bit later can see the team peak at the right end of the season. But you also don’t want to be unprepared come round one.’’

Josh Bode addresses his players at training on Tuesday night in their first run after the Christmas break.
