Relatively slow write speed. hen it comes to storing your photos, less definitely isn’t more. With a whopping 12 terabytes on tap, this external hard drive has enough space for over 200,000 Nikon D810 raw files, for example. Alternatively, smaller capacities can be had for a less daunting price.

As the Duo’s name suggests, on the inside lurks a pair of hard drives. But joining forces doesn’t just increase capacity, as double the drives can also mean double the speed. Thanks to the wonders of RAID technology, we were able to read video files at an SSD-rivalling 298MBps, and write speeds were almost as quick. Transferring images is always slower, though, with read/write speeds of 168MBps and 49MBps respectively.

If you’d rather have safety over speed, WD’s software can configure the drives to duplicate your data, so if one drive should fail, the second has an identical copy. Other included apps also make it a breeze to back up your computer, and password protection and data encryption add extra security.
