How plan­ning will help you cap­ture bet­ter shots

Un­der­stand­ing where the sun will be dur­ing the day is es­sen­tial for mak­ing the most of

any land­scape. The most dra­matic light­ing ef­fects gen­er­ally take place around sun­rise and sun­set, so be­fore I ven­ture to any lo­ca­tion, I check where th­ese will be in re­la­tion to the fea­tures in the land­scape.

Even so, na­ture and the weather don’t al­ways go to plan, so I will of­ten change my com­po­si­tion and fram­ing (or even the di­rec­tion that I’m shoot­ing) to re­act to where the light is fall­ing on the land­scape.
