Digital Camera World - - SHOOTOUT -

WE kicked off our day of street photography in Soho and Chinatown, moving on later to Borough Market

when torrential rain set in. “This shot was taken in Southwark,” reveals Paul. “I saw two girls sitting by the wall and I loved the retro ‘Motorhead’ look about them. I couldn’t get a covert shot of them as I wanted them to look straight into the lens; so I just approached them, told them what I was doing and just asked if I could take a couple of pictures. I had my business card to hand and promised that I would send them copies of the photos (which I did). I did this throughout the day with all sorts of people, and didn’t get any negative responses.”

Paul used a ‘nifty fifty’ 50mm prime on the day. As he points out, it’s a “lightweight and unobtrusive” lens with a large maximum aperture that’s perfect for low-light portraits. “The light was fairly flat and overcast, which helped to reduce harsh shadows,” Paul continues. “I ended up cropping the photo slightly to remove a coffee shop sign that was behind the girl.”
