DNA: We love your name!

Sage Suede: My real name is Andrew, but I chose Sage Suede because suede is a fashion material that’s soft, yet hard. I know y’all like that. [Laughs]. It’s a good way to describe my beats and style of vocals.

How else would you describe your music? Because I love poetry, heavy bass and drums, my style generally falls into hip-hop and EDM. I like to hit the beat hard and feel moved by strong rhythm. I think of myself as similar to

Missy Elliot because I like to use quirky samples and enjoy poetic ambiguity in my lyrics.

Your music has a very tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, especially Thicc Juicy Bass.

The album title was meant to be hot and represent the feeling of thicc bass.

And that’s your juicy butt on the cover! [Laughs] I wasn’t planning that… but I like that picture of me.

Exactly how juicy is your butt?

[Laughs] I guess it would be 10/10. On my second day of work at a recruiting company, my pants ripped in half all the way down the crack and my butt popped out. I wasn’t even wearing underwear! My booty was a lot bigger than I thought.

You’ve done a lot of fashion modelling, too. Yes, and I guess I seem thirsty because I’ve represented a lot of water bottle brands. [Laughs] My favourite photoshoots were with One Gig Co [skateboard boutique] and Package Menswear.

Is the world of male modelling cut-throat and bitchy, or rather genteel?

There is a lot of rejection and drama, so I would say cut-throat.

Tell us about your boyfriend.

He’s not in the music industry but likes to sing. I met him on a dating app although we were living in the same apartment complex. Apps cause a lot of issues with finding a stable relationship. People don’t value their partners as much as they used to. A lot of millennials and younger won’t ever settle down because they started dating with apps and a new hook-up is always a few clicks away. Has music always been your saviour?

Music is the one thing I can always count on. Whenever I feel sad, I listen to trip-hop.

What would you say is your best feature?

I’m big in the front and big in the back, so it depends on what he’s looking for!

What’s one thing that might surprise people about you?

People are surprised that I’m a polyglot and write music in over five languages.

DNA is celebrating our 20th anniversary this year, what would you like to wish us?

I wish y’all lots of booty! That is an awesome milestone. Here’s to many more.

What’s your message to the world?

Be yourself. It’s the coolest way to be. No one can be you as well as you can. Being your hottest is about being the best version of yourself.
