Semi-autonomous Grade Control technology is essential for professional civil construction companies looking to boost efficiency and raise safety levels.

With the tech now more affordable than ever, the Cat 323F L excavator comes fully equipped with the latest 2D Grade Control.

The 25-tonne 323F L is a long-undercarriage digger powered by a Cat 120kW C7.1 ACERT diesel engine. With a maximum dig depth of just under 7m and a forward reach of around 10m, the 323F L is a machine engineered for large-scale projects and construction sites.

The 323F L is one of a range of Cat F Series excavators designed to deliver up to 10 per cent better fuel efficiency and 45 per cent faster grading, and to cut equipment operating hours by 34 per cent.

Garland, asset manager at contractor Robson Civil Projects, to step into the cab of a new Cat 323F L to trial the F Series machine and put the latest 2D Grade Control technology to the test in an actual trench dig for a residential development site on the NSW Central Coast.

With more than 25 years’ experience and running over 100 earthmoving machines, Garland is a man who knows his excavators.

“This was our first time using 2D Grade Control, so we were impressed to see an increase in efficiency of 10-20 per cent before the end of the first day,” he says. “It won’t allow us to overexcavate, which is a huge cost saving. Not only is it safer, it’s more efficient.”

Cat 2D Grade Control is designed to take the guesswork out of excavation, allowing the operator to control depth and slope to within millimetres through the in-cabin display panel.

“What’s so appealing to me about this machine is the 2D Grade Control will do about 90 per cent of the work we would normally do with 3D but without the $80K or $90K price tag and all the base stations to run it,” Garland says.

In addition to the immediate productivity benefits, Caterpillar says its 2D grade system can greatly improve safety by eliminating the need for operators to leave the cab.

“We eliminate the need for someone in the trench checking the levels and there’s less need for our operator to be getting in and out of the machine,” Garland says.

“Not only is it safer it allows us to do a job with one person instead of two.”

WesTrac says it offers a huge choice of machines from 11 tonnes to 90 tonnes, plus access to Australia’s largest parts inventory and largest branch and field service network.

The Cat 323F L comes with a work-ready bundle including the 2D Grade Control, a pin grabber coupler, a GP dig bucket and more, says Justin Bell, the WesTrac business unit manager for global construction and infrastructure products.

“We are offering a 5-year, 6000-hour Equipment Protection Plan [EPP], as well as the Cat Fuel

Edge program to help manage operating costs,” Bell says.

“Cat EPP protects your machine while the Cat Fuel Edge means WesTrac will give you a parts credit to the same value if you exceed the agreed fuel burn rate.

“You’re not just buying a machine; you’re investing in a business solution that helps you achieve more with your equipment.”
