Picture: Marcus Whisson BALLAJURA, Bassendean and Bayswater children are in good hands, with local children’s centres and staff named finalists in the Australian Family Early Education and Care awards.

Ballajura Child Care and Bayswater family early starters program are up for the service of the year award, with Michelle Hillary from Wind in the Willows Bassendean a finalist in the director of the year category.

The finalists, including 19 from WA, were decided from more than 1000 nominations Australia-wide and will be vying for the top prize in four categories.

The awards, now in its 11th year, celebrate and acknowledge the commitment, hard work and passion by outstanding leaders and services in the community.

Ballajura Child Care co-ordinator Amanda Andrew said this was the second time the centre was a finalist for an award.

“We are confident we can get it this year; the rural centre finalists are usually the ones to beat, though,” she said.

“I have been here for five years and in that time we have had very consistent staff, with many people that have been here as long as or longer than me.

“The bonus with that is we have parents bring their first children here then their other children come here too and they are all looked after by the same staff.”

Ms Andrew said the centre was still riding the high of receiving an exceeding rating last year, the highest rating a centre could get.

The judging panel will reveal the State winners on June 8.
