SCALE Modellers of WA (SMC) wants to recruit more juniors during its new fiveyear lease period at the Robert Thompson Reserve clubrooms in Noranda.

At its June 27 council meeting, Bayswater council voted to approve a renewed lease, which will cost $1275 in rent annually for the utilities, insurance and 80 per cent council rates.

The 60-member club was established in 1980 and moved to Noranda in 2008.

SMC also hosts members from seven other clubs and is a major partner in planning and organising WA’s premier scale modelling event, WA Scale Model Expo (WASMEx).

SMC treasurer Stuart Chappell said finalising the lease was a smooth process by the City of Bayswater and the club.

Mr Chappell said dedicated facilities for scale modelling was rare.

“It has become a lot more popular, there are a lot more manufacturers producing more products compared with 20 years ago,” he said.

“We want to pull a lot more juniors into it because it is a very skilled hobby.

“Also, there are some fathers who join up and the kids will come along, too.”

SMC member John Evans, who held two classes at Morley Senior High School, said there were three juniors at the club after having about 30 in the past.

“People move states and kids come and go … it has a lot to do with the parents as well, if the parents cannot bring them here, how are they going to get here,” he said. “But if we get them at eight years old, we can have them for four or five years.

“If we do not get the kids and put them into it, once us old fellas are not here anymore, there would not be too much of a follow-up and that is what it is all about – teaching them a new hobby and getting them away from computers.”

The club meets every Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
