Cladding fire risk audit

THE Town of Bassendean is unlikely to be subject to a statewide cladding audit in light of the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London.

A Building Commission spokeswoman said it had contacted all local governments on July 4 asking for assistance with the audit.

She said all authorities were still finalising the scope of the audit.

“The task of identifying which of the hundreds of highrise buildings in WA have cladding attached is quite arduous and is likely to take some time,” she said.

“Searching records of buildings that fall within the audit scope will take some effort.

“The time it will take to complete the audit will depend on the number of buildings found to have cladding attached.”

She said it was too early to know how long the audit will take.

Town chief executive Bob Jarvis said the Town as aware of the issues with cladding.

“We would participate if requested, but it is unlikely that any buildings in the Town have such materials, and our tall buildings have a masonry exterior – which is probably why we were not asked to participate,” he said.

“However, the study is likely to result in new regulations and standards which will apply to all new buildings.”

Meanwhile, Bayswater Mayor Barry McKenna said the City was providing information on its buildings to the commission.

“In light of the recent Grenfell Tower tragedy in London it’s very important to make sure our buildings are safe,” he said.

“We value the input of the Building Commission and our priority is obviously the safety of our residents living and working in these buildings.”

City of Stirling approvals manager Greg Bowering said the local government was still in talks with the commission about a possible audit.

He said there was no way to estimate ahead of the audit how many buildings could potentially have cladding.
