Bridge to be made safer

AN upgrade of an unsafe road barrier on Guildford Road and outdated Ashfield Bridge has been given the green light by councillors after Main Roads WA (MRWA) declared them in poor condition and a safety issue at last month’s Bassendean council meeting.

MRWA spokesman Greg Peak addressed council with a proposal to protect the current bridge and barrier, from vehicle impact and as well as prevent serious accident or injury.

“The existing is a steel structure (bridge) constructed in 1968 and designed to the standards of that era, which are not met currently,” he said.

“Traffic on Guildford Road has also significantly grown with growth in Bassendean and City of Swan, as has size of vehicles.

“The existing barrier is in very poor condition.

“We had an opportunity to examine the barrier and determined the barrier essentially unsafe and it would not perform to its fullest function in the case of vehicle impact.”

Mr Peak said as part of the upgrade up to four Fiscus Hilli trees would have to be removed but MRWA was happy to replace them as well as supply extras to make up for the loss.

As part of the upgrade four Fiscus Hilli trees, located on the northern Guildford road will be removed and three Callistemon Viminalis trees planted to replace them in slightly offset locations to facilitate the barrier installation.

Councillors Paul Bridges, Bob Brown and Renee McLennan said while they acknowledged the safety concern, they asked if all options had been taken into account so there was no loss of trees. Councillors Gerry Pule, Mike Lewis and John Gangell said people’s safety was paramount.

Bassendean chief executive Bob Jarvis said it was important to construct the new bridge due to safety risks presented by MRWA.

The upgrade is not expected before mid 2018.

Planned improvements to an area of road and bridge deemed unsafe.
