SARAH Brown (“Slip­pery slope”, Oc­to­ber 3) has mis­un­der­stood.

Much as one may dis­agree with the Mus­lims in al­low­ing men to have four wives but not vice versa, they have ac­tu­ally pre­served more of the tra­di­tional struc­ture of mar­riage than is the case with same-sex unions.

One thing that has been agreed upon by all cul­tures since time im­memo­rial is that mar­riage in­volves male-fe­male bond.

If we can elim­i­nate some­thing so fun­da­men­tal - and yet still call the union a mar­riage - how much more can we elim­i­nate as­pects of mar­riage which, though, vi­tal, are less fun­da­men­tal, such as the num­ber of part­ners per­mit­ted? FA­THER DAVID WATT Dianella
