BALGA Se­nior High School prin­ci­pal Ge­off Har­ris is one of five prin­ci­pals to be awarded the na­tional 2017 John Laing Award ear­lier this month.

The award recog­nises the work and com­mit­ment to ed­u­ca­tion and con­sis­tent demon­stra­tion of out­stand­ing school lead­er­ship, and hon­our high­lyre­spected former Tas­ma­nian prin­ci­pal John Laing.

Mr Har­ris, who has worked in the devel­op­ment of ef­fec­tive teach­ing and learn­ing pro­grams for Abo­rig­i­nal and Tor­res Strait Is­lander stu­dents, said he was hon­oured to re­ceive the award.

He has also co-or­di­nated a ma­jor work­shop fo­cus­ing on solutions to fam­i­lies and com­mu­nity peace and safety, and was re­cently in­vited to present at the World Indige­nous Peo­ples Con­fer­ence on Ed­u­ca­tion in Canada.

Prin­ci­pals Aus­tralia In­sti­tute chief ex­ec­u­tive Paul Geyer said the award was highly re­spected and sought af­ter and that out­stand­ing school lead­er­ship had never been more in­flu­en­tial in shap­ing so­ci­ety.
