While crowd­fund­ing fa­tigue is set­ting in, Gar­riott is still an ad­vo­cate. “While we had pre­lim­i­nary dis­cus­sions with pub­lish­ers, it was clear that was go­ing to be an up­hill bat­tle. Crowd­fund­ing has def­i­nitely al­lowed de­vel­op­ers to break out of the mould set by tra­di­tional pub­lish­ers, who chase the lat­est hits to the ex­clu­sion of all else.”

For Gar­riott, though, there have been ben­e­fits beyond the $5mil­lion raised. “Beyond fi­nan­cial in­de­pen­dence, we have dis­cov­ered a com­mu­nity of sup­port­ers… deeply en­gaged in feed­back, as well as con­tribut­ing mu­sic, art, even code.”

That said, there’s a Lord Bri­tish fac­tor.

Dream­fall Chap­ters, for in­stance, so­licited mu­sic to help widen its sound­scape, only to be lam­basted for ask­ing for free work. Even with will­ing mu­si­cians, the plan was quickly can­celled.
