It’s a good idea to vet char­ac­ters who might make it into your rul­ing fam­ily. It’s easy to miss a new gen­eral’s age and have him die of nat­u­ral causes be­tween con­quests. Some are dis­posed to be­come ill or sire il­le­git­i­mate chil­dren, which can throw the fam­ily into dis­ar­ray. At­tila’s pol­i­tics sys­tem is con­fus­ing to in­ter­act with, but does throw up amus­ing and dis­rup­tive sit­u­a­tions. Oc­ca­sional popup dilem­mas ask you to choose a fate for po­lit­i­cal dis­si­dents. The choice is nor­mally be­tween ex­e­cu­tion, pun­ish­ment or mercy, and the con­se­quences are re­vealed a few turns later.
