Gun­point’s suc­cess has af­forded Fran­cis the lux­ury of work­ing on this game with­out hold­ing down a day job si­mul­ta­ne­ously. But that hasn’t made the process much eas­ier. “If I’d just have thought of this game two or three years ear­lier, I prob­a­bly would have done this in­stead of Gun­point, and it would have killed me!” he says. “I never would have fin­ished it – it would have been im­pos­si­ble for the skill level I had back then. And even with the skill level I have af­ter fin­ish­ing

Gun­point hap­pened to turn out to be some­thing I could do. The code for board­ing [ Heat Sig­na­ture’s] ships had to be re­pro­grammed sev­eral times, and was a big, dif­fi­cult bit of maths.”
