How im­mer­sion, and pres­ence, will trickle down to mo­bile


While GearVR of­fers a pared-down ver­sion of vir­tual re­al­ity, in­creas­ingly more ef­fi­cient and pow­er­ful mo­bile devices should see the gap close in the near fu­ture. “One of the most im­por­tant things in VR is the abil­ity to move your whole body, not just your head,” says Stu­art. “Cur­rently you only get that on the higher-end ma­chines, but in the fu­ture there’ll be in­side-out track­ing on mo­bile-phone-based devices that can scan the room you’re in, take that data back in and then tell the con­tent that you’re mov­ing your whole body. It’s in­cred­i­bly pro­ces­sorheavy at the mo­ment, but in the fu­ture the mo­bile phone side of the mar­ket, given pow­er­ful enough pro­ces­sors, will be able to com­pete with what Ocu­lus and HTC can do.”
