Mi­crosoft’s fi­nan­cial back­ing means this se­quel to a lov­able sham­bles should be a rather less shaky im­ple­men­ta­tion of the game’s ob­vi­ous po­ten­tial. To that end, Un­dead Labs prom­ises State Of De­cay 2 will be, as se­quel-mak­ing best prac­tice re­quires, big­ger, broader and, cru­cially, smoother. It will also fea­ture drop-in co-op for up to four play­ers.

State Of De­cay was a break­out hit that took ev­ery­one – even Un­dead Labs it­self – by sur­prise. The se­quel, how­ever, car­ries the weight of ex­pec­ta­tion. The stu­dio is keep­ing its feet on the ground, at least, pay­ing sin­cere trib­ute to the play­ers and stream­ers that made the first game such a suc­cess, and as­sur­ing them their crit­i­cisms have been heard and are be­ing dealt with. Should the first game’s idio­syn­cra­sies re­turn from the dead, fans may not be so for­giv­ing.
