Op­ti­cal track­ing could take VR to the next level


While GPUs are be­com­ing more pow­er­ful, op­ti­mi­sa­tion re­mains a fo­cus for de­vel­op­ers work­ing with VR, and there are a num­ber of ex­cit­ing new tech­nolo­gies set to help. “One of the things that could be po­ten­tially the next step in VR is op­ti­cal track­ing,” Spetch says. “The player looks in a di­rec­tion and we can draw the de­tail in the en­vi­ron­ment [at that point] at a high res­o­lu­tion be­cause we’re fo­cus­ing on the spe­cific po­si­tion of the eye, and we can LOD that out when they look away. That’s one of the op­por­tu­ni­ties we have to re­ally push the tech­nol­ogy for­ward – it’ll be in­ter­est­ing to see what hap­pens.”
