Nin­tendo worked hard to make sure its rel­a­tive in­ex­pe­ri­ence with on­line games was rarely ap­par­ent, but Spla­toon wasn’t with­out its prob­lems. We only ex­pe­ri­enced a hand­ful of dis­con­nec­tions dur­ing our time with the game, but dur­ing its early months other play­ers were more fre­quently kicked out. The Au­gust up­date en­sured a much smoother ex­pe­ri­ence for most, but those not blessed with fast In­ter­net ser­vices were dou­bly cursed: Nin­tendo be­lat­edly ac­knowl­edged that any­one with down­load speeds be­low 1.5Mbps and up­load speeds be­low 1.0Mbps would be af­fected by dis­con­nec­tions. Else­where, the cross­re­gion match­mak­ing led to in­stances of no­tice­able lag – par­tic­u­larly against Ja­panese play­ers – while no ef­fort was made to re­bal­ance teams when dropouts oc­curred. For most, these were mi­nor ir­ri­tants, but it’s un­likely that play­ers will be so for­giv­ing next time.
