GetEven could mark a new fron­tier in videogame sound de­sign. But un­like vir­tual re­al­ity, which many stu­dios have adopted rapidly, Deriv­iere be­lieves that chang­ing how the game in­dus­try thinks about au­dio will re­quire a lot of ef­fort and bring op­po­si­tion. “I’ve been de­fend­ing this ap­proach, 3D au­dio, for years,” he says. “But what you’re telling peo­ple is, ‘You need to work much harder. The way you like to work? You need to stop it. You need to stop writ­ing mu­sic the way you would nor­mally and start un­der­stand­ing games’. We’re pi­o­neers on this. No one has done it be­fore. So it’s dif­fi­cult to be heard.”
