While House­mar­que takes pride in its game­play-first phi­los­o­phy, an­other im­por­tant as­pect of any fast-paced shooter is its UI. “In Nex, the aim is for the HUD to be some­thing that you get all of the in­for­ma­tion from, but won’t nec­es­sar­ily even re­mem­ber what it looked like after­wards be­cause it’s so in­te­grated with the whole ex­pe­ri­ence,” ex­plains Ru­dolf Wester­holm, who is both me­dia man­ager and UI de­signer. “We re­ally have to be able to keep things re­ally, re­ally sim­plis­tic. We re­ally try to think about all the ef­fects dur­ing game­play, and the way the colours of the UI con­trast with the en­e­mies and back­grounds, so that the player will al­ways know what’s hap­pen­ing.”
