Peak per­for­mance


It’s a chas­ten­ing mo­ment when we fin­ish Ce­leste’s pre­view build and re­alise we’ve es­sen­tially been play­ing on Easy mode. Com­plet­ing an area un­locks a remixed ver­sion of the stage, though ‘remix’ doesn’t quite cover just how markedly dif­fer­ent the lay­outs are. Here, you’re forced to learn a new tech­nique: once you’ve en­tered one of Ce­leste’s float­ing starfields (we’re still not en­tirely sure how to re­fer to th­ese pe­cu­liar­i­ties), you need to make a reg­u­lar jump just as you exit, which sees your mo­men­tum carry you huge dis­tances. And if that wasn’t enough, you can also play the orig­i­nal ver­sion of the game, which was built over the course of a four­day game jam for the pro­gram­mable vir­tual ma­chine Pico-8.
