One way to improve how videogames portray disability would be to facilitate more discussions between those who have a disability and those who don’t. Olivia White observes that the industry could do a lot more to help developers with disabilities attend events and meet-ups. “Even shows and expos that want to present talks on disability representation and accessibility frequently get it wrong. There are basically never accommodations made for disabled developers or journalists to take part remotely, nor do many of the events make it clear how disability-friendly a venue is, and in general there’s just not that much awareness amongst the folks who work in the industry, particularly the indie dev scene. If you can’t go to all the events and parties then you often get totally overlooked, and it’d be nice if people made a little more effort to include disabled folk with the drive and passion to be involved, but who lack the physical ability to always do so.”
