CO-FOUNDER OF SAATHI, AN INDIAN MANUFACTURER OF BIODEGRADABLE, COMPOSTABLE SANITARY PADS MADE OF BANANA FIBRE

ELLE (Australia) - - The Elle Manual -

On her passion project:

“Only 16 per cent of women in India have access to sanitary pads, so this is something that we wanted to change by providing a healthy, sustainable option. The products currently on the market are mostly made of plastic or contain chemicals that are bad for the skin and long-term use can even cause cervical cancer.”

On making a difference:

“I was born and raised in New York but I’ve been living in India for almost four years. If you can make an idea work here, you immediately affect a huge population. It’s a great place to be able to try out something that can really change lives.”

On being a female leader:

“I’m young, a foreigner and a woman, so I try to be as assertive as possible in situations where I’m not taken seriously. Sometimes even that doesn’t change the dynamics and I end up saying, ‘Okay, it’s more efficient if my male co-founder takes the next meeting.’ I haven’t found the perfect solution yet, but we’re working on it.”
