Word skills workshop

Ellenbrook Advocate - - NEWS -

AN education expert will be holding a literacy workshop to help Ellenbrook parents with their children’s reading and spelling skills.

Dr Lillian Fawcett, founder of Cracking the ABC Code, will be presenting the workshop later this month in Ellenbrook.

She said many children found completing NAPLAN stressful because they did not have the literacy skills to be able to read the text or answer the questions.

She said the workshop would give parents an opportunity to learn new techniques based on the latest research to improve children’s spelling and reading.

“Most parents are aware that their children are having difficulty at school but don’t know where to obtain support to improve their children’s reading and spelling,” she said.

“Research consistently shows students with literacy difficulties benefit most from programs that systematically teach phonics, the way we represent sounds in words.”

NAPLAN results show that by Year 9 more than 20 per cent of students are at or below the minimum expected standard.

The Cracking the ABC Code Founder workshop will run from 6.30 to 9pm on Wednesday June 28, at Coolamon Pavilion.

Places are limited. To register, visit crackingtheabccode.com/workshops/wa-parentliteracy-worshop or call 0402 156 567.
