AN Ellenbrook mum will take part in the Big Walk for PMH this month to raise money for Princess Margaret Hospital.

Tania Potts remembers the challenges her twin daughters faced when they were born five weeks premature 21 years ago.

She said if it wasn’t for the medical staff at PMH, her daughters may not have survived.

“They were so tiny when they were born five weeks premature at only 3lbs 1oz and 4lbs 3 oz,” she said.

Ms Potts said she now wanted to give back to help other families of premature babies.

“The amazing health professionals at PMH have helped our family so much over the years, starting off with the babies when they were born prematurely and then dealing with all of the usual stock-standard issues like broken legs and trips to emergency after being worried about fevers,” she said

“Because of the incredible care we’ve had, I’ve always donated to the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation. For the most part my girls were healthy and happy and their time at PMH was short-term, but many families are not so lucky and our children’s hospital needs as many resources as possible, which is why I’m keen to raise as much money as possible by taking part in the Big Walk.”

The Big Walk for PMH raised $84,000 last year, with 2000 people taking part.

Organisers hope this year will be even bigger, with participants able to walk 6km or 15km.

PMH Foundation chief executive Denys Pearce said the Big Walk for PMH had raised more than $1 million since it started 21 years ago.

“We’re enormously grateful for the support the community has provided over the years,” he said.

The Big Walk for PMH will kick off on November 12 at Burswood Park.
