Is this the last straw?

CITY of Swan councillor Claire Scanlan will put forward a motion at tonight’s ordinary council meeting that the City adopt a policy to discourage the use of single-use plastic.

The motion would include the use of plastics such as bags, balloons, plates, cutlery and drinking straws at all City functions and events.

The motion would also include the information regarding this policy be provided to all those that hire the City premises and buildings.

Cr Scanlan said she wanted the City to be leaders in waste and set an example.

“The possibility of dredging in our rivers and oceans for plastic is very frightening,” she said.

“I hope that the City can lead the way in the waste conversation and not only discourage the community from using single-use plastic, but also set that example.”

Cr Scanlan said she had been working with City staff on the motion for a while and hoped other councillors would support it.

“We have to start somewhere,” she said.

“I thought it was an important statement to make by raising the motion at our July council meeting to coincide with the July 1 plastic bag ban.”

Councillors will consider the motion tonight.
