MORE than 2000 people attended Naidoc Week celebrations at Midland Oval last week, which included music, food and traditional entertainment.

The City of Swan hosted the July 10 event celebrating Aboriginal culture, which included a Welcome to Country, flag raising and awards ceremony.

There was a youth zone with life art, virtual reality experiences and a footy competition, as well as craft activities for elders.

Free food included kangaroo stew with damper.

This year’s theme, ‘Because of her, we can’, acknowledged the achievements of Aboriginal women within their community.

“This year’s theme is particularly important in recognising the central role of Aboriginal women in their community,” Mayor David Lucas said.
