BERLIN SYNDROME

Empire (Australasia) - - On.Screen -

OUT 20 APRIL / RATED TBC / 116 MINS DIRECTOR Cate Shortland

CAST Teresa Palmer, Max Riemelt

CLARE IS AN Australian backpacker who arrives in Germany seeking a life-changing experience. She meets a handsome local man, Andi, and an instant spark turns into a one-night stand, that turns into obsession for Andi, and a nightmare for Clare. Teresa Palmer (Lights Out, Hacksaw Ridge, and a dead-ringer for Kristen Stewart) is terrific, given that for many of her key scenes, she’s alone on screen with no-one to bounce off; Palmer convincingly juggles self-doubt and inner steel. Max Riemelt (Sense8, but don’t hold it against him) smuggles enough weirdness into his good-guy routine that it’s believable when he turns out to be a freak. Director Shortland cannily shapes both a tense confinement thriller and a psychological investigation of Stockholm Syndrome; a bit overlong but gripping. TK
