BASED ON HERMAN Koch‘s novel, The Dinner unites a stellar cast delivering top-notch performances with an intriguing premise: mentally ill Paul (Coogan) and wife Claire (Linney) meet over an opulent dinner with Paul’s politician brother Stan (Gere) and his wife Katelyn (Hall) to figure out what to do when their sons engage in a horrific crime they’ve yet to be caught for. It’s all undone, however, by the fact the characters are all deeply unlikeable, Coogan’s Paul being so consistently rude that you’ll feel compelled to throw a punch in the general direction of the screen. Oren Moverman’s queasy directing style only adds to the distaste for a meal best sent back to the kitchen. JJ
