THERE’S A SOLID romcom core to this

Reese Witherspoon vehicle, but it gives itself too many stories to tell and winds up giving none of them sufficient space to develop. Witherspoon is Alice, a single mum who, via some drunken shenanigans at her 40th birthday, winds up inviting three aspiring filmmakers to stay with her. The possibilities of that are promising, particularly with two of the three vying for Alice’s affections, but too many sub-plots — the guys trying to make their film and pursue solo careers; an ex-husband who won’t back off; Alice’s attempt to start a new career — overcrowd it. Witherspoon deserved better for her return to romantic comedy. OR
