Hog­warts is founded by Go­dric Gryffindor (brave one), Helga Huf­flepuff (kind one), Rowena Ran­ven­claw (clever one), and Salazar Slytherin (evil one).

1000 Ad(ish)

The founders give Gryffindor’s hat con­scious­ness, cre­at­ing the Sort­ing Hat. The four fall out over Slytherin’s wiz­ard su­prem­a­cist views, and he storms off af­ter cre­at­ing the Cham­ber Of Se­crets.

1300(ish)

Hog­warts es­tab­lishes the first ir­re­spon­si­bly dan­ger­ous Tri­wiz­ard Tour­na­ment with ri­val schools Beaux­ba­tons and Durm­strang.

1892

Al­bus Dum­ble­dore ar­rives for his first year. He later be­comes a pre­fect and head boy.

1908

Newt Sca­man­der en­rols, but later is ex­pelled in a beast-re­lated in­ci­dent.

1910(ish)

Dum­ble­dore re­turns as De­fence Against The Dark Arts teacher.

1938

An or­phaned Tom Rid­dle, the heir of Slytherin, ar­rives.

1943

Rid­dle coins his own nick­name, Lord Volde­mort, and opens the Cham­ber Of Se­crets to kill Mug­gle-born stu­dents with the Basilisk. Ha­grid takes the blame.

1965(ish)

Al­bus Dum­ble­dore be­comes head­mas­ter, and wisely turns down Lord Volde­mort’s ap­pli­ca­tion for De­fence Against The Dark Arts teacher.

1991

Harry Pot­ter turns up for his first year...

1992

... and kills evil Pro­fes­sor Quir­rell. Months later Ginny Weasley, pos­sessed by Volde­mort’s teen diary, re-opens the Cham­ber Of Se­crets.

1995

Huf­flepuff stu­dent Cedric Dig­gory is mur­dered by Volde­mort at the end of the Tri­wiz­ard Tour­na­ment. Risks were clearly not as­sessed.

1996

Dum­ble­dore is ousted by the Min­istry Of Magic, briefly re­placed by Min­istry psy­chopath Dolores Um­bridge.

1997

Dum­ble­dore, hav­ing been re­in­stated as head­mas­ter, is killed and suc­ceeded by Severus Snape. Bru­tal.

1998

Harry Pot­ter re­turns af­ter skiv­ing for a year to blow up half the school and kill Volde­mort in the Bat­tle Of Hog­warts.
