Whispering Brook named best Victorianbred 2 year old

LOCAL breeder Peter Ford received an award from Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria (TBV) recently for Whispering Brook, who was named Champion Victorian-bred 2yo for 2015-16.

Mr Ford is bloodstock manager for Hillside Thoroughbreds, and accepted the award on behalf of the Nagambie-based stud and its owner Peter Arvanitis.

Whispering Brook, who was sold to Perthbased owner Alan McAlister in 2014, enjoyed great success last season, winning the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate, G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes and G3 Gimcrack Stakes.

She was described as ‘leagues above Perth’s 2yo fillies last season’ by the Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia.

A lack of weight contributed to a leaner back end of the season, and she will be given time to relax and fatten up before training begins again next year.

Mr Ford purchased Whispering Brook’s dam Artful Whisper in 2005, and said he had been impressed by how well she was progressing.

“There are anywhere between 6-7000 horses bred each year in Victoria,” he said.

“To be considered the pick of the lot is a fantastic result, and after winning her first five starts it’s definitely a title that is deserved.”

Peter is certainly no stranger to success, with plenty of breeding highlights throughout a long and distinguished career in the industry, including the purchasing of Black Caviar’s dam, Helsinge, as an unnamed three year old.
