Philip and Marcus steer their way to deserved win

Euroa Gazette - - SPORTS -

THE weather gods were certainly threatening to ruin Avenel Golf Club’s annual tournament last weekend.

The event managed to survive Saturday but unfortunately Sunday’s men’s championship had to be postponed.

Saturday’s Pioneer Park 4BBB par event went ahead as scheduled, and apart from one heavy shower, the day wasn’t too bad, however the horrible forecast did deter quite a few players.

The eventual winners of the Pioneer Park Shield were the father/son combination of Philip and Marcus Steers from Euroa who carded a very respectable plus five.

The runners-up for the men’s event were another father/son combination in Paul and Brendan Redfern also from Euroa, with plus three.

The ladies’ event was won by Avenel’s Anne Burns and Euroa’s Levenia Redfern, (not to be out done by her husband and son), who also scored plus three.

The runners-up were the Gisborne/ Avenel combination of Kerry Peterson and Lyn Wells with plus one.

There were four nearest the pins on offer, but only one was claimed and that was by Freda Edwards from Euroa.

As previously mentioned, Sunday’s men’s event had to be postponed and the new date has been tentatively set for Sunday, August 20.

Hopefully the weather gods will be kinder this time.

A reminder to anyone interested in playing in this tournament that there are prizes in excess of $750 and also the club’s president, Tim Batten has offered a fabulous $500 for a ‘Hole in One’ on the day (to be shared if more than one).

Thanks to everyone who contributed to make Saturday a success, especially the club members for their work on the course and for bringing along delicious food to share for afternoon tea.

And of course thanks to the visitors from other clubs – even if they did take home all the trophies!

This coming Saturday is the first round of the club championships for men and ladies, so we will be playing a stroke round. Tuesday’s golf will be a par event. Finally, committee members are advised that due to a booking in the clubhouse, this month’s meeting has been moved to (tomorrow) Thursday, August 10, at 7.30 pm at the clubhouse.

Good golfing to everyone.
