ABS re­ports a de­cline

THE Aus­tralian Bu­reau of Statis­tics (ABS) last week re­leased its 2016 Causes of Death data - which in­cludes an­nual na­tional sui­cide in­for­ma­tion.

The 2016 sui­cide data pre­sented in the ABS pub­li­ca­tion are ‘ pre­lim­i­nary data’ and will be sub­ject to an an­nual re­vi­sion process for the next two years. Some key pre­lim­i­nary data in­cludes: males (17.9 per 100,000) and 715 fe­males (6.2 per 100,000). Down from 3027 deaths in 2015;

groups, in­clud­ing a mod­er­ate re­duc­tion in sui­cide rates for males in the high risk age groups of 3549 years;

2016 in sui­cide rates for other age groups in­clud­ing males 15-24 years and fe­males 20-34 years.
