Antcliff’s Chase tops Dookie Wine Show with its Riesling

Euroa Gazette - - NEWS -

ON Tuesday evening, September 18, the Dookie Wine Show held its 15th Annual Show Presentation in Shepparton.

The gathering of 200 guests savoured a delicious dinner prepared by GOTAFE hospitality students and apprentice chefs, elegantly complemented by regional prize-winning wines from St Anne’s, Gapsted Wines, Maygar’s Hill, Allira and Antcliff’s Chase.

From among more than 100 wines entered by over 30 wineries, Antcliff’s Chase won the top award, ‘Wine of the Show’, for their 2017 Riesling.

Owner and vigneron, Chris Antcliff Bennett of Caveat in the Strathbogie Ranges, was proud to accept the Championship Cup.

“I am very pleased to win this award,” Mr Bennett said.

“It is recognition for the quality and diversity of wines from the Strathbogie Ranges and, in particular, reinforces our reputation for producing outstanding Riesling wine.”

As a student at Dookie Agricultural College, Mr Bennett developed a keen interest in grape-growing when he helped plant the college’s vineyard in 1978.

In 1982, he and his father, the late John Antcliff Bennett, planted their own vineyard in Caveat, producing the first vintage in 1989.

“After 30 vintages, I can say with confidence that here at Caveat, we have what is known among viticulturalists as ‘a distinguished site’ for riesling, being a perfect match of climate, soils and site selection for the variety,” Mr Bennett said.

Since making the move to process his grapes at Wine x Sam, Mr Bennett has seen the already-high quality of his wine increase.

“I am grateful for the help we have received through the expertise of Sam Plunkett and his team,” he said.

As well as having sales of their full range of wines at their scenic cellar door in Caveat, and via the ‘Scarecrow Wine Club’, Antcliff’s Chase wines are available for sale through local businesses including the Ruffy Produce Store, Burtons IGA and Albert’s Café in Euroa, the White Hart Hotel in Longwood and Under the Sun Café in Strathbogie.

There will be an opportunity for the public to meet Mr Bennett, taste and purchase Antcliff’s Chase wines at special prices at the Strathbogie Golf Club from 11:30am on Melbourne Cup Day.

For further information contact Mr Bennett on 04870 37501.
