Hey Ron, we just won the world championship…
There is a story that when Brabham clinched the ’66 world championship at Monza, the first Tauranac knew about the triumph was when Jack told him during the plane trip back to London. Unbelievable as it sounds, Tauranac says it is true
RT: Yes, that was at Monza. He went wide on a corner, and so he didn’t win that race, so I guess I just didn’t think much of it. Then we were flying back to Fairoaks, and as we were coming in – it was just a grass airfield – I saw all these cars lined up and people everywhere. I said ‘what’s all that about, Jack?’ and he said ‘we won the world championship’. It was the first I knew about it. I was only ever interested in beating people in the next race. I didn’t bother counting…
F1R: So it didn’t mean much to you even when he said that?
RT: What could I do? It was just a fact.
F1R: But you didn’t feel like celebrating, or the have any sense of what you had achieved?
RT: How would I celebrate? I had to work the next day, and I was never a drinker. Even now, if I have two drinks in a night, that is about my lot. I think twice in my life I had too much to drink.
