Speedfest - 2015
For those unable to attend, or did not know about, this year’s Retro Speedfest, take a look here at this small sample of what was on offer over the June long weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park. It’s not easy to single out one star car of the meeting, because there were so many fantastic old openwheelers and sportscars – but it was hard to go past the Bowdens’ ex-Vic Elford 1971 McLaren M8E 8-litre Chev Can-Am monster. In the same sportscar eld were a pair of Porsche 962s, a rare BMW M1 and an ex-Keke Rosberg Budweiser Lola T332 Can-Am car… Elsewhere there was a different kind of Lola T332, the ex-Alan Jones Theodore Racing Formula 5000 version, which with Alex Davison at the wheel was the fastest car all weekend – at least four seconds faster than the current V8 Supercar lap record, and only six seconds off Nico Hulkenberg’s outright record, set in an A1GP car. Watching Davison battle with the Lola T430 of Tom Tweedie and the magnicently turned out Jagermeister Hans Stuck 1974 MarchCosworth F1 driven by none other than John Bowe was itself worth the price of admission. Bowe’s March was just one of a number of ‘70s and ‘80s F1 machines, including a Niki Lauda BRM, Alan Jones Williams FW07 and an ‘86 model Benetton. The Retro Speedfest event evolved out of the old Tasman Revival meeting, and is held each year at SMP.
