Leanne Tander takes FF title
Seven days after Molly Taylor made history by becoming the first female driver to win the Australian Rally Championship, Leanne Tander achieved the same milestone in Formula Ford.
Racing against rising teenage future F1 hopefuls literally half her age, Tander held off Will Brown to clinch victory in the Australian Formula Ford Series in the final round at Phillip Island.
Tander, 36, is a twice runner up in the Australian Drivers’ Championship and is a race winner in national Formula 3 competition. In both 2007 and ’08 she was denied the championship in the final round, losing out to Tim Macrow and James Winslow respectively by a mere handful of points.
A title win in either of those years would have made Tander the first female driver to win a national Australian motorsport championship – instead, that honour went to Taylor in 2016 with her ARC victory.
