Hill had badly bro­ken his legs at Watkins Glen in 1969, but typ­i­cally de­fied pre­dic­tions that his ca­reer was over to take up a race seat in pri­va­teer Rob Walker’s team for 1970. He scored a point for sixth at Brands Hatch – al­though how much his per­for­mance was in­flu­enced by the team mem­ber pic­tured here is un­known…

“I re­mem­ber my dad hav­ing the Brooke Bond tea spon­sor­ship, but I don’t re­mem­ber the chim­panzee. Poor thing. Imag­ine tak­ing a chimp to a mo­tor race – ter­ri­fy­ing for it! But they gen­uinely seem to be hav­ing a chat. My dad’s look­ing him right in the eye. Fan­tas­tic!”
